Portraiture

Tony Vaccaro

Tony Vaccaro became a fashion and lifestyle photographer for U.S. magazines after the war. Vaccaro was really good portrait photographer and same as in his was photos he tried to capture at least some reality in his portrait pictures as well. He always tried to capture personality in picture to have at least something true in that picture. He believed that picture has to have special quality to see their personality and he liked to take picture of person as he is in everyday life instead of what they want to be in picture (in other words - fake). He did his portraits based on what he did in photojournalism; he still tried to capture decisive moment. Vaccaro knew that most of the picture has to be composed, but the rest can be something that is not composed and something that is real instead of what people make it.
When he took his photos, he always had his own opinion and instead of taking sitters opinion, he always took his own one. In the end, he was the photographer and he knew what he was doing and he didn’t need anyone to tell him how to do his job.
Vaccaro took the pictures when the person was least prepared because that was when the decisive moment came in. He liked to see how people change when they are behind the camera and not acting. He really loved seeing what people are really like and what their face can tell when they are not acting and when they are just themselves.

Picasso
This picture was taken by Tony Vaccaro.
When he took picture of Picasso, Picasso tried to pose, but Vaccaro
told him that there is something wrong with his camera. Picasso
went from posing to neutral and that was chance for Vaccaro
to take a picture of his real personality.
